Why Companies Are Quietly Rehiring Software Engineers

Despite predictions that AI would replace most developers by 2030, companies are quietly rehiring software engineers in 2026. 

While AI accelerates coding, it generates more errors, lacks business context, and struggles with self-correction, forcing developers to review and maintain increasing amounts of code. Studies show AI code contains up to 1.7 times more bugs and increases maintenance by 38%, reducing productivity and raising costs. 

As a result, firms are rehiring experienced developers, often former employees, in a “boomerang hiring” trend. Junior roles decline, while demand for senior engineers grows, highlighting that AI augments developers rather than replacing them entirely today.
